Two banks have been named as being at the centre of the Financial Services Authority's (FSA's) probe into the mishandling of customer complaints.
According to the Financial Times, Lloyds and RBS are believed to be the two banks singled out by the FSA for further action, which could result in them being fined or having to pay redress to customers.
When questioned by the FT, both banks refused to say whether they were at the centre of the FSA compliance probe, but an RBS spokesman confirmed an investigation in relation to aspects of complaint handling was being carried out.
A spokesman for Lloyds told the FT: "We take all customer complaints seriously and are committed to working with the industry and regulators to ensure that complaints are dealt with fairly, quickly and consistently."
The representative added that the bank "continuously reviews policies and procedures" to ensure fair treatment of customers across its business.
