Our charity
EducAid is a charity providing education to young Sierra Leoneans, many of them ex-child soldiers, all of them seriously affected by the brutal civil war: girl mothers, displaced, orphaned and traumatised and so on.
EducAid runs the only free secondary schools in Sierra Leone. Despite targeting some of the most vunerable youngsters in the country and those with the most checkered educational histories, EducAid's public exam results are consistently at the top of all the league tables.
EducAid operates in Sierra Leone, the poorest country in the world, according to the UNDP's human development rankings 2008-2009. EducAid believes that education is the most powerful way to break poverty in the lives of the individuals with whom it works and also the country as a whole. Democracy cannot be built on a foundation with 80% illiteracy, 23% of children dying under 5 and the highest maternal mortality rates in the world - but these are the statistics of death in Sierra Leone. One step at a time, one child at a time, this can be changed.
EducAid has grown in recent years, from modest beginnings, to have three schools and around 1400 students. The cost of providing schooling for a student - including teachers, books, classrooms etc - is just £10/month/student. Despite this resources are heavily stretched, and the schools many times over subscribed.
